Standout Volunteers Honored for Work in Community

Award ceremony recognized locals’ kindness and dedication.

November 14, 2025

Yesterday Mayor Tim Keller and the City of Albuquerque acknowledged two exceptional people with One Albuquerque and Volunteer of the Month awards, heralding their service to the community.

The following were praised for their ongoing contributions:

  • One Albuquerque Award recipient:
    • Torie Savage, volunteer with Animal Welfare Department.
  • Volunteer of the Month Award recipient:
    • Verma Villegas for her work with the Parks & Recreation Department’s Open Space Division.

These awardees demonstrate the meaningful impact of actively giving back to the community. From matching pets with forever homes to keeping our City’s natural areas healthy and flourishing, their efforts exemplify the range of ways everyday people can get involved.

“There are so many opportunities to make a difference,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “I hope more people will follow the example of these volunteers, finding something that speaks to their heart and also does the City good.”

“Growing up in Albuquerque, I lived by and played in the river and came to realize that I could help the river environment and inspire other folks to collaborate and steward the river as well,” awardee Verma Villegas shared.

The One Albuquerque and Volunteer of the Month awards are given to City workers and community members who go above and beyond in their service to the public. If you’d like to nominate someone or get involved in a volunteer activity, visit the Office of Civic Engagement or the One Albuquerque Volunteers website.
