Southwest Airlines Announces Daily Service Between ABQ and Burbank, CA

Film, tourism, and business draw in new direct flight from Southern California.

Sept. 16, 2021

A testament to Albuquerque’s growing film industry, Southwest Airlines announced today the launch of daily, non-stop service between Albuquerque and Hollywood Burbank Airport. This is the first daily service offering between the two cities. Service will begin January 17, 2022.

“The Sunport is New Mexico’s connection to the world, and service to and from Burbank is a big boost as filming continues to ramp up in our state,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “This new service not only provides better connection for our film industry, but also opens new doors for economic development and tourism with southern California – a win for building a gateway to the southwest.”

“We’ve been looking forward to service to Burbank for quite some time, and this option is sure to strengthen our ties with the film industry,” said Nyika Allen, Director of Aviation for the City of Albuquerque. “Today’s announcement from Southwest is an exciting and welcomed one as we continue to rebound and recover from Covid-19.”
According to representatives from Southwest, this service builds on the company’s foundation as a point-to-point airline, giving customers between New Mexico and the San Fernando Valley a quicker journey. Tickets are on sale now and may be purchased at southwest.com.

“Albuquerque is on a solid path to be one of the largest high-tech and sustainable film production hubs in North America, so this new flight makes perfect sense and represents a major asset for filmmakers and the City alike,” said Cyndy McCrossen, Film Liaison for the City of Albuquerque’s Film Office. “It provides a direct connection to the heart of Hollywood, where most of the major studios are located.”

In addition to added service to Burbank, Southwest will also be increasing Albuquerque operations in the first quarter of 2022 in several cities, including Dallas, Houston, Las Vegas, Phoenix, and San Diego.
