Mayor Tim Keller Honors ABQ resident with One Albuquerque Award
Today Mayor Tim Keller presented Mauro Garcia, a former member of the 1- 200 Alpha Company of the New Mexican Guardsman, with the One Albuquerque Award for his quick response in saving the life of a drowning boy at Tingley Beach. Garcia sprang into action, jumping into the pond and pulling the boy out after hearing the boy’s mother scream for help.
“Mauro Garcia embodies the spirit of One Albuquerque for the courage and bravery he exhibited when saving the life of a little boy,” stated Mayor Tim Keller. “The One Albuquerque Award is about recognizing members of the community who step up and take actions that make Albuquerque a better place for our families and neighbors.”
The One Albuquerque Award is given to members of the community for extraordinary efforts in making Albuquerque a safer and more inclusive and innovative place to live. The award aims to highlight the positive impact individuals can have on communities and call on others to think about ways they can help their neighbors and the city as a whole.
“I’m honored to be recognized by Mayor Keller,” said Garcia. “At that moment I didn’t think about being a hero, I just did what any person would do if found in that situation.”
Anyone is welcome to nominate a member of the community for a One Albuquerque Award. Nominations can be submitted at www.cabq.gov/OneABQAward
