Albuquerque is a Finalist for a $1 Billion Fusion Energy Plant

Pacific Fusion announced today the city is one of 2 selected for a new fusion facility.

A new nuclear fusion company that could bring 200 new jobs to the City, has chosen Albuquerque as a finalist for a first-of-its-kind fusion research facility.

Pacific Fusion could set up a 225,000-square-foot facility in Mesa del Sol that will develop new fusion energy options. Fusion is the process of combining atoms to create energy, unlike nuclear fission that splits atoms. The process creates clean electricity that could be used to power modern power-hungry electronics, AI, and electric cars.

“Albuquerque is the ideal spot for a company like Pacific Fusion. We have the know-how, we have the people, and we have the perfect location,” said Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller. “Pacific is looking at our city for their $1 billion facility because we are already leaders in clean energy, and we’re going to show them that we are the best place to create jobs, build a facility, and call Albuquerque home.”

Along with the city, Fremont, California is another finalist. The City Economic Development Department worked with the State of New Mexico to recruit Pacific Fusion, and the facility could be located at Mesa del Sol.

Founded in 2023, fusion energy company Pacific Fusion is building directly on breakthrough innovations from Sandia National Laboratories to deliver the world’s most affordable on-demand power source. Sustainable and green energy is a top priority for New Mexico and is considered a target industry for sustainable economic growth.
