Description

In 1980, New Mexico painter, Arnold Puentes, traveled to Mexico City with the aid of a research grant to study methods, materials, and techniques of mural painting. In 1981, he graduated from NMSU with a BFA in Painting and in 1985 Puentes relocated to Albuquerque, where he has remained an active artist within the community.

Arnold Puentes’ paintings, murals, drawings, and mixed media portray a history of traditional cultural myths and legends while challenging conventional depictions. At 1 p.m. Puentes will present where he finds his inspiration, his medium choices, and his approach to subject matter as it pertains to his own heritage and culture. The presentation will feature imagery of Quetzalcoatl (feathered serpent), Tonatiuh (sun god), Coyolxauhqui (moon goddess), Mayahuel (agave goddess), and Tonantzin will be discussed along with the Virgin de Guadalupe and the legend of La Llorona.
