APD Highlights Early Success of Metro 15, Asks Public to Call Crime Stoppers with Information about Violent Criminals

20 Violent Offenders Arrested in First Two Months of Continuous Operation.

Friday, Jan. 31, 2020

Mayor Tim Keller and APD Chief Mike Geier highlighted the arrests of the first 20 offenders since the launch of the Metro 15 operation two months ago.

“Many violent offenders, some who have been wanted by police for several months, are now in jail as a result of the Metro 15 operation,” Mayor Tim Keller said during a news conference today. “We are holding violent, repeat offenders accountable, and that means locking them up so they can’t continue to prey on our communities.”

The Metro 15 Operation is a targeted component of Mayor Keller’s Violence Intervention Program – a proactive effort to attack violent crime from all sides. APD joined forces with the state Attorney General, Bernalillo County District Attorney, and the Office of Superintendent of Insurance to create the Metro 15 Operation to target a continuously updated list of 15 violent criminals in Albuquerque.

“We have all hands on deck to target specific violent offenders who threaten our public safety,” Chief Geier said. “We asked for help from the public, and we are getting quality tips through Crime Stoppers. That sends a strong message to offenders that they can’t hide and continue to perpetrate these acts of violence. Our officers will track them down.”

The Metro 15 includes a working list of the top 15 violent crime offenders in Albuquerque identified by prosecutors. The Metro 15 list is continuously updated to reflect arrests and add new offenders to the list, focusing on offenders and fugitives with criminal histories that can be used in successful prosecutions once they are apprehended.

Twelve of the original Metro 15 offenders have been arrested. Law enforcement agencies are still looking for the final three from that original list.
