Firefighter Saves a Man’s Life following a Motorcycle Crash

Mayor Richard J. Berry recognized on Friday an off-duty Albuquerque firefighter who saved a man’s life moments after he crashed his motorcycle.Lt. Toby Baca of Rescue 14 was named this week’s Friday’s Hero. Each week Mayor Richard J. Berry recognizes at least one public safety employee who goes above the call of duty.

Time and time again, we see situations where off duty firefighters rush to the aid of those in need, Mayor Berry said. “Lt. Baca instinctively took action when he encountered a citizen whose life was in danger, and thanks to his quick response, the victim survived his injuries.”

On Oct. 2, Lt. Baca and his wife were driving on Wyoming near Lomas when they saw a man on a motorcycle get hit by a car. The impact caused the motorcycle to skid across the road. The motorcyclist was trapped underneath his motorcycle.

Lt. Baca immediately raced to the man. The victim was face down, unconscious and bleeding profusely. While calling paramedics, Lt. Baca checked the victim’s vitals and found that he was not breathing. Lt. Baca cleared his airway and the man began to breathe again. He assisted and stayed with the victim until Rescue 5 paramedics could arrive on the scene.
