Community solar is an opportunity for households to save money on their electric bill while powering their homes with sustainable, renewable energy. It’s a way for anyone throughout Albuquerque - no matter who you are or where you live - to benefit from the clean energy harnessed from the sun and the cost savings that come with it. Where will the energy come from? Each company builds their own solar farms within New Mexico. You don’t have to worry about where it comes from or how it gets to your home, you just get to pocket the savings! How can I participate? If you’re interested in community solar, you’ll get to choose which company provides your solar energy. After you sign-up, you’ll continue to receive your PNM bill in the mail, but this time it will be lower! You’ll also receive a new bill from the solar company. Together, your total combined energy costs will be cheaper than it was before. What if I live in an apartment or I rent my home, can I still sign-up? Absolutely! Community solar was designed to ensure that renters are able to access the benefits and savings that come from solar. How much will I save? The average customer will save at least 10% off their PNM bill. Some customers could save up to 30% or more, depending on their household income. If I sign-up, do I have to buy solar panels or install them on my roof? No! Anyone can take advantage of the cost savings from community solar without buying solar panels or installing them on your roof. There is no equipment to install or upgrades to make in your home to access community solar. What if I move apartments or buy a new house - will I need to sign-up again? No! Community solar is tied to the customer, not the home. As long as your electric bill stays in your name and comes from PNM, you can take community solar with you. How much does it cost to get started? Nothing at all. There are no start-up costs, down payments, maintenance fees, or hidden costs with community solar. Is there a limit to how many people can sign-up? Yes. Right now, people are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis and there is a maximum number of people who can sign-up.
