Volunteers from “AmeriCorps Seniors” Honored for Dedication
Today, volunteers from the AmeriCorps Seniors Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) gathered at the Balloon Fiesta Park Event Center to be honored for their years of service by First Lady Elizabeth Kistin Keller and the Department of Senior Affairs.
A total of 53 volunteers were celebrated for their years of service at museums, senior centers, nonprofits, and other community organizations across the city. They received pins marking 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 40 years of service as a testament to their commitment to giving back.
The highlight of the ceremony was the recognition of 94-year-old Dorothy Otto, the program’s longest-serving volunteer who was honored for 40 years and more than 10,000 hours of service. Over the years, Dorothy has given her time to many places, including the Albuquerque International Balloon Museum and Bear Canyon Senior Center where she continues to help out as an Activities Facilitator.
“Volunteering has been a big part of my life, and I’m so grateful for the experiences and friendships it’s given me,” said RSVP honoree Dorothy Otto. “I encourage everyone to volunteer because helping others, even in small ways, can make a big difference.”
“Today’s volunteer honorees remind of us of the incredible impact we can make when we step up for our community,” said First Lady Elizabeth Kistin Keller. “Their dedication makes Albuquerque stronger, and their selflessness inspires us all.”
AmeriCorps Seniors RSVP enrolls, places, and provides support for volunteers, ages 55 and older at local organizations committed to making positive change. For more information about volunteering with Senior Affairs, please visit cabq.gov/seniors/senior-volunteer or call 505-764-1009.
