Senior Affairs Department Announces 42nd Annual “A Senior I Know” Essay Contest

Students grades 1-5 can share stories about older adults in their lives
January 16, 2024

The Department of Senior Affairs is sponsoring the 42nd Annual “A Senior I Know” intergenerational essay contest for 1st through 5th grade students. The contest encourages students to write about a significant older adult who has had a positive impact on their lives.

This year’s contest submission deadline is February 14, 2024. Winners will be celebrated during a special ceremony to be held at Manzano Mesa Multigenerational Center this spring and will have their essays published in a commemorative booklet.

“For over 40 years, this program has been helping to create a stronger Albuquerque by encouraging the passing on of values and wisdom between generations,” said Anna Sanchez, Director of Senior Affairs. “We are proud to keep this beloved tradition going and hope to see it continue for decades to come.”

This contest is open to all students within the APS school district boundaries and essays must be submitted through the child’s school, including APS elementary schools, parochial, private, charter, or home schools. Essays must be submitted to one of the designated locations by 5 p.m. on February 14, 2024 and cannot be submitted online.

Winning essays are chosen by the “A Senior I Know” committee of retired educators. For essay contest rules, drop off locations, key dates, and judging criteria, please visit cabq.gov/seniors/youth-programs.
