Palo Duro Senior Center Set for Revamp
After serving the community for more than 50 years, Palo Duro Senior Center is being expanded and improved to provide more space and functionality for the growing number of seniors who love and use the center.
The City begins renovations at Palo Duro Senior Center September 1, refreshing a facility that has served Albuquerque’s older adults for more than 50 years.
The project includes a new addition with restrooms and additional storage, upgrades to existing restrooms and the lobby and check-in area, kitchen and activity room improvements, replacement of aging HVAC equipment, utility and water line improvements, and updates to accessibility and building safety.
Construction will take place in phases, with FacilityBUILD serving as the project contractor. The center will remain open during exterior work and construction of the new addition on the east side of the building, with the goal of minimizing impacts to regular operations.
Beginning Monday, October 19, the center will close to the public so interior renovations can move forward. The closure is expected to continue through summer 2027.
“Palo Duro Senior Center has been enjoyed by residents for over half a century, and this work will help ensure it can continue serving the community for at least that much longer,” said Anna Sanchez, Department of Senior Affairs director. “We want to give members time to prepare for the October closure and connect them with other locations where they can continue accessing their favorite services.”
During the closure, Palo Duro members are encouraged to visit Bear Canyon, North Valley or Highland senior centers – or any of the City’s senior and multigenerational centers – for programming and activities. The City’s Department of Senior Affairs will continue sharing information with members ahead of the closure to help them prepare.
Additional information about the renovation, closure and alternate locations will be shared with Palo Duro participants as the project progresses. For more information, call Palo Duro Senior Center at 505-721-6992.
