Never Too Late to Feel Great!

National Senior Health and Fitness Day offers interactive health and wellness for older adults

The Department of Senior Affairs in partnership with the department of Arts and Culture and exclusive sponsor Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico is hosting National Senior Health and Fitness Day on May 25, 2022, from 9am-12pm at the ABQ BioPark Botanic Gardens. In an effort to encourage staying active as a way of life for Albuquerque's older adults, the morning will be filled with interactive group exercise demonstrations, a mini-health fair, fall prevention education, health screenings, low-impact walking events, and Tai Chi demonstrations in the BioPark's Japanese Garden.

“It is never too late for seniors to start engaging in regular exercise and making their overall wellness a priority,” said Anna Sanchez, Director of Senior Affairs. “The key is to find something enjoyable, and this event gives the opportunity to sample a variety of different activities that can serve as a motivator for someone looking for ways to stay active.”

“At Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico, we are committed to supporting the health and wellness of older adults in our community,” said BCBSNM President Janice Torrez. “We’re excited to be partnering with the City of Albuquerque for this special event that offers seniors the opportunity to learn about different ways to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle.”

The event’s fitness demonstrations will be versatile for all abilities and will offer free admission for the first 500 adults 50 years or older, including one caregiver per adult. Pre-registration encouraged as space is limited. Participants can visit any City of Albuquerque senior or multigenerational center to register or call 311 for assistance.
