Senior Affairs Department to Annual Host Senior Fitness Event

Interactive event aims improve quality of life by helping older adults stay active
May 30, 2023

In celebration of this year’s National Senior Health & Fitness Day, the Department of Senior Affairs, along with exclusive sponsor Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico, will host a free health event on Wednesday, May 31, 2023, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at North Domingo Baca Multigenerational Center.

National Senior Health & Fitness Day is an annual event that encourages older adults to stay active to maintain their independence and live healthier, happier lives. Over 100,000 older adults are expected to participate in local events taking place across the country, including here in Albuquerque.

“The goal is to inspire older adults to prioritize their health by helping them find an activity they enjoy and making fitness programs more accessible,” said Department of Senior Affairs Director Anna Sanchez. “No matter your age, it’s never too late to start a new exercise routine or make changes that can improve your health.”

Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in group exercise demonstrations including tai chi, yoga and dance. The event will also feature a mini-health fair, a climbing wall, health screenings and low-impact walking events.

“Exercise and physical activity are important for maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle,” said BCBSNM President Janice Torrez. “We’re proud to be partnering with the City of Albuquerque to support the health and wellness of older adults in our community.”

Admission to the event is free and no registration is required. To learn more about the Department of Senior Affair’s year-round Sports and Fitness Programs, visit
