Age-Friendly Housing Design Competition Moves to Next Stage
Competition details and requirements will be shared ahead of the Oct. 2 registration deadline
The City of Albuquerque’s Age-Friendly Housing Design Competition is moving into its next stage, with two upcoming opportunities for design professionals and University of New Mexico students considering entering the competition.
The competition, funded through an AARP Community Challenge Grant, is seeking ideas for cottage-style housing that supports older adults in aging in place, with access to nearby services and amenities while fitting within the surrounding neighborhood.
A virtual competition brief will be held Tuesday, Sept. 22, from noon to 1:30 pm via Zoom. Organizers will cover competition requirements, submission expectations and other key details, with time for questions and answers from prospective participants.

Those who miss the webinar, prefer an in-person session or have additional questions can attend an in-person competition brief Wednesday, Sept. 23, from noon to 1 pm at UNM’s School of Architecture & Planning, Room P104 (basement). The session is open to design professionals and students interested in the competition. Refreshments will be provided.
Attendance at either session is not required to enter, but prospective participants are encouraged to attend to gain a better understanding of the competition requirements. The virtual session will be recorded and posted to the project webpage.
Registration for the design competition is open through Oct. 2, with final competition entries due Nov. 13. Separate competition tracks and cash prizes are available for design professionals and UNM students.
