Age-Friendly Cottage Design Competition Moves Into Feedback Stage

City seeks community experts to help guide housing design proposals

October 14, 2026

The City of Albuquerque's Age-Friendly Cottage Development Design Competition is moving into its next stage, with more than 60 individuals and teams registered to participate.

Funded through an AARP Community Challenge Grant, the competition invites design professionals and University of New Mexico students to develop cottage-style housing concepts that support older adults with aging in place.

On Thursday and Friday, Oct. 22–23, competitors will have an opportunity to receive feedback from subject matter experts during Charrette & Feedback Sessions at UNM's School of Architecture and Planning.

The sessions will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day, giving participants an opportunity to discuss their proposals and consider perspectives that may help strengthen their designs before the Nov. 13 submission deadline.

Subject Matter Experts Needed

The City is seeking volunteers with experience in age-friendly communities, housing, neighborhood advocacy, architecture and design, development, financing or planning to participate in two-hour feedback sessions.

Those interested in volunteering can email [email protected] to arrange a time.
