APD Investigating Fatal Crash Involving Pedestrian on West Side

Tuesday, 11/16/2021

ALBUQUERQUE - During the early morning hours of Nov. 16, 2021 around 5:40 a.m. Southwest Area Command Officers were in the area of Unser and Interstate 40 Eastbound (off ramp), and were flagged down by a passer-by about a vehicle versus pedestrian crash.

Officers located a male, who had succumbed to injuries on scene prior to officers or medical staff arriving. As a result, an APD Motors Call Out was initiated.

It is unknown if alcohol or speed is a factor in this crash at this time.

Media is asked to stage at Maverick off Unser and Los Volcanes.

At this time the exit ramp from Interstate 40 eastbound to Unser is closed due to the crash. Traffic in the interstate is operating normally.

UPDATE:

APD’s Motors unit was called out to a fatal crash located at Unser Blvd NW and Interstate 40 Eastbound. During the investigation it was determined that a white Dodge truck was traveling from northbound Unser onto Eastbound I-40 having just entered the on ramp. As the truck was exiting Unser, a pedestrian wearing dark clothes was crossing the roadway. The driver of the truck saw an object crossing the roadway and attempted to miss it however after striking the object with the passenger side of the truck. The driver then stopped and learned it was a person who had been struck. The driver called 911 and the pedestrian was determined to be deceased on scene. This investigation is ongoing at his point. At this time it does not appear that alcohol or speed were contributing factors for this crash. It does appear to be other pedestrian error at this time. Currently there are no charges pending.
