Nature in Your Neighborhood: Community Center Youth Program

In partnership with the City of Albuquerque Family & Community Services Department this program includes nature-based outdoor exploration aimed to connect youth to their natural world and discover that nature is all around them, even at their local community center. Community Center Summer Program Youth learn to use binoculars and magnifying lenses, practice their powers of observation, document their discoveries, and are introduced to free resources to continue their nature discovery at home.

My First Family Campout Program

This overnight campout introduces families who have had limited access to camping and the outdoors (due to economic or social systemic barriers) to the joy of camping in a fun and supportive way through community partnerships. All camping gear and meals are included. Families learn how to pitch a tent, enjoy an evening campfire, engage in nature discovery, and learn about Leave No Trace principles. Prior to the campout, families attend a pre-camping Q&A presentation “What to expect, and how to prepare for your first camping trip.”

Eco Care Kits: Foster Care Youth Program

The kit is designed to support children’s mental, emotional, and physical health with a variety of items designed to support a connection to the restorative effects of nature. Extensive research shows that nature can support the healing of trauma in various ways. The kit includes nature-based games, activities, materials, animal plush, and a nature story book.
This project currently partners with NM Kids Matter, a non-profit that advocates for children who’ve been abused or neglected by managing the Court Appointed Special Advocate program (CASA). A CASA volunteer ensures that each child’s individual needs remain a priority in an over-burdened child welfare system.
