Setting Students Up With Back-To-School Resources

It Takes a Village to Prepare for a New School Year, and the City is Ready to Help!

July 24, 2025

ALBUQUERQUE – As summer break draws to a close, preparing to go back to school can be stressful for many families. To help, the City of Albuquerque is stepping up with programs and resources to give every student a strong start to the school year. City departments are offering affordable after-school programs at community centers, multi-generation centers and APS sites citywide.

The Department of Youth & Family Services (YFS) is hosting Cruzin’ Into the School Year in partnership with sponsors such as Presbyterian Turquoise Care. Youth can receive a free backpack and school supplies, and shoe vouchers from Coyote Gravel at West Mesa Community Center while supplies last.

“Liz and I know how hectic this time of year can be, especially for those without access to supplies or support.” said Mayor Tim Keller. “We are working to fill those gaps and make sure students have after-school programs and backpacks to start the year off right.”

Resources Before School Starts:

  • Cruzin’ Into the School Year – Saturday August 2, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Pre-registration required. YFS will give out thousands of backpacks and school supplies between two sites, Cesar Chavez and West Mesa Community Centers.

“We understand how important it is for kids to feel prepared from day one,” said YFS Director Jess Martinez. “Our goal is to make sure families have support in and outside the classroom.”
