More Than a Game: Mentorship and Teamwork Dominate in Community Center Summer League
City of Albuquerque Basketball League Wraps With Summer Tournament
ALBUQUERQUE – After five weeks of exciting matchups and friendly competition, the City of Albuquerque’s Youth and Family Services Department (YFS) celebrated the finale of its summer basketball league with a two-day tournament featuring teams from a dozen local community centers.
This free league, part of the city’s affordable summer youth offerings, brings together kids ages 10 to 15 enrolled in summer programs at participating community centers. For many of these players, this opportunity provides a structured and supportive athletic experience they might not otherwise have.
What makes the league especially unique is its focus on mentorship. All games are coached and refereed by youth employees, giving older teens a meaningful leadership role while helping younger participants build confidence, discipline, and a sense of belonging.
“The summer basketball league is about more than just the game,” said Director Jess Martinez. “It’s about creating positive experiences, fostering sportsmanship, and showing our youth that they belong – both on and off the court.”
The tournament marks the culmination of weekly games held throughout the summer and offers a chance to honor the skills, growth, and sportsmanship shown by all participants. Families and friends are invited to cheer on teams and enjoy the spirit of healthy competition and neighborhood pride.
"Programs like this summer basketball league are exactly what community is all about, giving our young people a place to grow, have fun, and support one another,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “I’m grateful for the mentorship happening on these courts and to our YFS team for building spaces where kids feel empowered, active, and included."
