Fueling Summer Fun: Free Summer Lunches Begin!
City launches 2026 Summer Meals Program at over 95 locations, helping kids stay nourished all summer long
School may be out, but the City of Albuquerque is making sure summer is filled with healthy meals and reading opportunities all summer long. The 2026 Summer Meals Program returns this week, providing free breakfasts and lunches to children and teens ages 1–18 at over 95 locations across Albuquerque.
For generations, Albuquerque families have relied on the City's Summer Meals Program to help bridge the nutrition gap when school cafeterias close for the summer. What began at a local community center more than 50 years ago has grown into a citywide effort serving thousands of young people each year.
"Summer should be a time for kids to play, grow and not worry about where their next meal will come from,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “Through our Summer Meals Program, we're helping families access nutritious food opportunities in neighborhoods across the city."
Meal service will begin at various parks on June 3, followed by community centers beginning on June 15. Meals are available on a first-come, first-served basis during designated service times.
This summer, families can enjoy more than just nutritious food. Through a continued partnership with Albuquerque Public Schools, many meal sites will once again host Story Time in the Park, bringing books, literacy activities, and read-aloud experiences directly into neighborhoods.
Children participating in Story Time sessions will have opportunities to hear stories from educators, engage in hands-on activities, and take-home books to build their own personal libraries.
"For more than five decades, we have has invested in ensuring children have access to healthy meals during the summer. We look forward to continuing that tradition while expanding opportunities for learning and connection throughout Albuquerque," said Director Jess Martinez.
