Over 750 youth were connected to job and volunteer opportunities

February 4, 2023

Today, One Albuquerque: Youth Connect hosted the fifth annual Youth Job and Volunteer Fair. This year, 791 participants 14 to 25 years old returned to a full-sized, in-person event to explore, apply, and interview for hundreds of positions, as well as attend educational sessions on professionalism, public speaking and interview skills, and drug testing.

“We are committed to connecting youth in Albuquerque with opportunities to build their brightest futures,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “Whether they apply for their first job, their next job, or learn professional skills, the job fair is another way to keep our youth safe and engaged.”

The fair offered hundreds of summer, part-time, and full-time jobs from employers across the city, including eleven City of Albuquerque departments and numerous non-profits and local businesses. The New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions was also on hand to review resumes and assist with career exploration.

“Investing in our kids and community is the best use of our resources,” said Community Services Division Manager Cristin Chavez-Smith. “We want to set our youth up for success and help them discover all the opportunities available. Our young employees are what make our programs the best they can be.”

Parents and guardians were also welcomed back this year to the Parent Lounge, where they learned about ways to support and empower their young job-seekers. The City provided transportation to the Job Fair from four City facilities increase access to the event.

The City of Albuquerque is one of the largest employers of young people in the state, and expanding programming and opportunities for youth remains a priority for the Keller administration. In the summer of 2022, the City hired 966 staff and 124 interns. Summer 2023 hiring will continue through April.
