City Partners with Multiple Agencies to Make Flu Vaccine Easily Accessible

Flu shots will lessen severity of flu symptoms and save hospital resources to fight COVID-19 pandemic
October 06, 2020

At a press conference this morning, Mayor Tim Keller and the City Environmental Health Department’s Dr. Mark DiMenna highlighted the partnership between several agencies to make voluntary flu vaccinations easily accessible for all Albuquerque residents. Getting vaccinated for the flu helps reduce respiratory illness and preserve limited health care resources that may be in short supply due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Last month we announced that we were partnering with the New Mexico Immunization Coalition to help make voluntary flu vaccinations easily accessible to all of our residents,” stated Mayor Tim Keller. “Getting a flu shot is more important now than ever as we continue the fight against COVID. Many of the clinics are drive-through which is a good test run for our readiness on future COVID vaccines.”

There are several upcoming events at which residents can get free flu shots, and the City has launched an interactive online tool to find a flu shot clinic near you. COVID-safe practices are in place at each clinic.

UNM will host a free drive-through flu shot clinic this Saturday, October 10 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 7801 Academy NE. The UNM-hosted clinic is available free for those ages six months and up. No insurance card is required. Residents are encouraged to wear sleeveless or short sleeve shirts for drive-through flu shots. For a faster experience, a preregistration form is available at the City’s website. Masks are required.

The City’s Department of Senior Affairs is partnering with UNM’s Geriatric Education & Health Maintenance (GEHM) team and Albertsons Market to help seniors get the flu vaccine. The GEHM Clinics are offering wellness checks with a limited number of free doses of the flu vaccine from UNMH tomorrow from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Manzano Multigenerational Center.

Albertsons Market Pharmacy will provide additional services for seniors with insurance later this month and into November. Dates and additional information will be available later this week at cabq.gov/flu.
