Expanding the Main Street Corridor Along Historic Route 66
Councilor Grout proposes amendment to the Main Street Corridor Project Comprehensive Plan to extend official Main Street Corridor designation eastward on Central Avenue, stretching from Wyoming Blvd to Tramway Blvd.
Bringing the 2014 Route 66 Action Plan to Life
This proposed extension directly supports the City’s original 2014 Route 66 Action Plan. By formally extending the corridor, the amendment addresses long-standing needs and establishes a clear roadmap for investment.
The amendment prioritizes several key goals for recommended improvements along East Central Avenue:
-
Infrastructure & Transportation: Upgrading transit access and roadway durability.
-
Safety & Visibility: Installing updated street lighting and enhanced streetscapes with safe, accessible pedestrian crossings.
-
Community Identity: Implementing distinct wayfinding signage and vibrant public art installations that celebrate our local heritage.
Economic and Cultural Benefits
Because this route is recognized under the New Mexico Economic Development Department’s New Mexico Main Street program, expanding the boundaries unlocks critical resources. The amendment aims to:
-
Foster an economically viable, thriving business environment for our eastside merchants.
-
Preserve and honor the unique cultural and historic resources that make Route 66 irreplaceable.
