City of Albuquerque Celebrates Inaugural Meeting of the African American Advisory Board
First-ever City board sets its mission and priorities.
ALBUQUERQUE, NM — Today, the newly established African American Advisory Board (AAAB) held its historic first meeting at the Albuquerque Government Building, marking a significant milestone in the City’s commitment to equity and inclusive governance. Transitioning from a temporary task force to a permanent body via City Ordinance, the AAAB is now formally integrated into the heart of municipal policymaking.
The board serves as a strategic partner to the Mayor’s office and the City Council, tasked with ensuring that the voices and aspirations of Albuquerque’s Black community inform and drive long-term legislative innovation. During the inaugural session, members focused on the five critical pillars of the board’s mission: Economic Mobility, Missing and Murdered Black Family advocacy, Health Outcomes, Cultural Heritage, and Civic Engagement.
“The establishment of this permanent board ensures that our City’s growth is informed by the lived experiences of our African American residents,” said Councilor Nichole L. Rogers, District 6 who sponsored the landmark legislation. “Today is not just a meeting; it is the beginning of a more equitable era for Albuquerque.”
As part of the first order of business, the board set general norms for group interaction and began development of the first by-laws for the organization. Election for executive leadership was postponed until all 17 of the board’s members are identified and seated. The AAAB’s elected officers will lead the AAAB in its work and will coordinate with City departments to implement data-driven solutions for the community.
The AAAB will hold monthly public meetings on the first Tuesday of each month. Residents are encouraged to attend and provide input on policy recommendations.
Public interaction is welcome and necessary to fulfill the AAAB mission. Visit the AAAB webpage for additional information, or apply today to serve on the board!
