Reticulated Giraffe Camilla Gives Birth to Healthy Female Calf

ABQ BioPark Welcomes Its Second Giraffe Calf of 2019.

July 8, 2019 - The ABQ BioPark Zoo recently welcomed its second giraffe calf of 2019.

Ten-year-old Camilla welcomed a healthy female calf in the early morning on Friday, July 5, 2019. The new baby's name is Sandi.

"We are proud to have such a healthy giraffe herd and strong giraffe program at the ABQ BioPark," said Erin Flynn, ABQ BioPark mammal curator. "We are very excited to welcome a new member of our reticulated giraffe herd and to be able to share with our guests the experience of watching our new arrival and Neelix growing up together."

The birth is part of the giraffe Species Survival Plan. Father Buccaneer has previously sired seven babies.

Animal wellbeing is the ABQ BioPark's number one priority, and various staff stepped up to make sure Camilla's delivery was as safe as possible including participating in a birth watch, providing heaters to keep her warm, and ensuring she had a safe and comfortable spot to deliver the baby.

Sandi currently has in/out access to the giraffe yard.

Previously, Camilla gave birth to female Malika, who was born in October 2017 and recently joined a new herd at the Lincoln Children's Zoo in Nebraska.

Media: You are invited to the giraffe exhibit at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 9, to get b-roll and interviews with one of our giraffe keepers.
