ABQ BioPark is excited to announce that a baby kangaroo, known as a joey, was born to western grey kangaroos Sheila and Sydney at ABQ BioPark Zoo.

The joey is currently out with the rest of the group, spending most of their time safely tucked away in Sheila’s pouch. Though, the joey has been spotted venturing out of the pouch more often as they and their curiosity continue to grow.

This bouncing baby is estimated to be about 8-9 months old, and the gender and name of the joey has yet to be determined.

Animal care staff first noticed signs of new life in Sheila’s pouch in November 2025. Over time, those small signs grew more visible—tiny legs stretching out, a tail appearing, and finally a head poking out in late January 2026.

In the coming months, the joey will gradually begin weaning off milk and eat more adult foods. Once the joey becomes about a year old, they’ll likely still be staying close to mom, but will start to explore their surroundings more and become more independent.

From a small start to a growing presence, this joey’s journey is one to watch. During your next visit, be sure to stop by and see if you can spot the newest member of the mob, and stay tuned to our social media channels for updates.
