
Job Opportunity at the ABQ BioPark: General Service Worker
The ABQ BioPark’s Maintenance team is seeking a motivated, helpful, and detail-oriented team member to serve as a Custodian at the ABQ BioPark.
The successful candidate will have a strong desire to learn, be self-motivated, and to work in a team environment is paramount. This position reports to the Facilities Maintenance Team
The ABQ BioPark consists of the Zoo, Aquarium and Botanic Garden, and Tingley Beach.
This position is employed through a temporary staffing agency, not the City of Albuquerque, and is located at the ABQ BioPark. This full-time position is limited to a two-year term.
Custodian duties include but are not limited to:
- Assist with routine at all locations; Zoo, Aquarium and Botanic Garden, Tingley Beach
- Clean and maintain city buildings and restrooms. Sweeping, stripping, mopping and refinishing floors using buffers, scrubbers, hand tools, and chemical cleaning agents
- Wash and dust walls, counters, doors, and windows
- Assist with set up and break down of various rooms, sites, and special events
- Collect and empty ash trays, ash cans, trash cans, waste baskets, and remove trash from offices and public areas. Cleaning and wiping inside and outside of the trash cans. Remove trash and litter from grounds; pull weeds on facility grounds, sweep walkways, driveways, and patios including outside gate and porches
- Clean outdoor furniture, fountains, and signage; power wash surfaces such as sidewalks and walls
- Clean restrooms; scour and clean all porcelain fixtures using cleaning powder and disinfectant, check and replenish tissue, paper towels, soap, and sanitizer
- Replace burned out light bulbs
- During inclement weather, remove snow, from walkways and entrance areas; spread ice-melting compounds as necessary
- Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within the area of assignment; resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner
- Adhere to safe work practices and procedures
A Successful Custodian will:
- Be punctual
- Perform all types of custodial and groundskeeping tasks
- Operate a variety of custodial equipment in a safe and effective manner
- Be motivated to work independently in the absence of supervision
- Communicate clearly and concisely
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
- Be comfortable working at heights, and exposure to loud noises from equipment and tools, cleaning chemicals, solvents, lubricants, noise, dust, and toxic fumes
- Have or obtain durable weather-appropriate clothing (rain gear, sun protections, insulated wear), and sturdy footwear or steel-toed boots
Qualifications
Applicants must be 18 years or older, have a High School diploma or GED.
Candidates must pass a security background check to be hired.
May be required to obtain a City Operator’s Permit after hire
Basic knowledge of custodial practices preferred
Prior custodial experience preferred
Ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation including, but not limited to, climbing ladders, bending, kneeling, working on knees for extended periods, working on uneven ground, hills, wet grass, gravel paths, and paved surfaces in contact with dirt, mud, animal waste, plant debris, and pests
Work schedule:
Working from 8 am to 5 pm with two 15-minute breaks, and a one-hour lunch, 5 days a week. Our shifts are flexible.
Pay rate:
$14.71 per hour. This position is employed through a temporary staffing agency, not the City of Albuquerque.
