Assistant Zookeeper II (Commissary)

The ABQ BioPark Commissary is seeking an enthusiastic and hardworking individual to assist in our Commissary and Clinic. Duties will include filling diet requisitions and standing orders, chopping and preparing diets, and caring for animals in our clinic. Learn how to be a Zookeeper from the ground up while assisting us in our Commissary and Vet Hospital.    

This full-time position is employed through a temporary staffing agency, not the City of Albuquerque, and is limited to a two-year term.

The Commissary Assistant duties may include:

• Assist the Commissary Supervisor in the day-to-day tasks inside of the ABQ BioPark Commissary
• Prepare and fill daily animal diets, which includes cutting, sorting, chopping and weighing, and delivery to appropriate animal areas
• Fill special requisitions ASAP
• Participate in the day-to-day tasks like cleaning, sanitizing, dusting, etc.
• Candidate must be able to lift boxes up to 75 lbs
• You must have a valid driver’s license in order to apply and work in this position 
• Receive general supervision from the Commissary Supervisor as well as the Zookeeper supervisor 
• Deliver daily diets
• Fill daily tubs with appropriate diets
• Rotate all produce, frozen, and dry diets as necessary 
• Wash and sanitize tubs daily 
• Sweep and mop kitchen and walk-in cooler daily
• Keep all areas of the diet room clean, tidy, and organized at all times. This will include but not limited to kitchen areas, walk-in cooler, walk-in freezers, dry storage, hay barn, and surrounding area of the building 
• Participate in receiving food deliveries and shipments
• Be able to use a manual and automatic pellet jack
• Assist in animal care at the ABQ BioPark clinic. Follow direction from clinic staff 
• Use of pest control methods 
• After receiving City Operators Permit, be able to deliver daily diets independently 
• Communicate clearly and concisely
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
• Perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation
• Understand and follow oral and written instructions

A Successful Commissary Assistant will:

• The Commissary Assistant is an extremely important job here at the ABQ BioPark. You will be expected to perform the duties of your job regardless of weather conditions
• Diets are expected to be delivered before keeper staff arrive for the day at 8 am, so arriving on time and being ready to work is essential to this position
• You will be assisting the Commissary Supervisor in all aspects of the diet room as well as the clinic. Be prepared to work hard and have fun

Work Schedule:

40 hours, 7 am to 4 pm. Weekend work required. 5 consecutive days with 2 days off, actual schedule will be available at the time of the interview.

Pay Rate:

$12.50 per hour. This position is employed through a temporary staffing agency. Background check and drug test required.
