ABQ BioPark Says Goodbye to Womona the Wombat

Womona was part of the Zoo family since 2010.

Aug. 11, 2020 - The ABQ BioPark Zoo is sad to announce the passing of its female wombat Womona, who had been part of the ABQ BioPark family since 2010.

Womona was humanely euthanized on August 9. She had chronic kidney failure, which veterinarians had stabilized over the years. However, due to her advanced age, she was no longer responding to treatments and her quality of life had declined.

Staff estimated that Womona was about 13 years old but her exact age was unknown as she was a rescued orphan from Tasmania.

Womona was a staff favorite and loved interacting with her caretakers and enrichment items in her habitat. Zoo staff and visitors will miss her.

The ABQ BioPark is the only Association of Zoos and Aquariums facility to house the common wombat (also known as the Tasmanian wombat). The Zoo is still home to Otto, who arrived with Womona in 2010.
