ABQ BioPark Celebrates the Life of Maya the Jaguar
The beloved jaguar spent nearly 12 years at ABQ BioPark where she received exceptional care throughout her senior years.
ABQ BioPark is celebrating the life of Maya, a longtime BioPark resident who was humanely euthanized last week after age-related health changes began affecting her quality of life.
Maya arrived at the BioPark in 2014 and became a favorite among guests and staff. As the Zoo’s only jaguar, she gave visitors a close look at one of the Americas’ most powerful and elusive big cats.
At 20 years and 9 months old, Maya lived beyond the median life expectancy for jaguars in accredited zoos. Her care in recent years included adjustments to her routine and enrichment to help keep her comfortable and engaged.
Last fall, the BioPark shared a Senior Animal Care Spotlight in honor of Maya’s 20th birthday and International Jaguar Day. The below video offers a closer look at the thoughtful care and enrichment she received in her later years and the close attention her team gave to her changing needs.
“Maya was a special animal, and it was a privilege to care for her,” said Dr. Carol Bradford, Senior Veterinarian at ABQ BioPark. “She made a lasting impression on her care team and was deeply loved by those who knew her best. We are grateful for the many years we had with her.”
She will always hold a special place in the history of the ABQ BioPark and in the hearts of those who knew and cared for her.
