About ETAB

The Emerging Technology Advisory Board advises the Mayor, the City Council, the Department of Technology and Innovation (DTI), and other City departments on how the City adopts and oversees emerging technologies. Its focus is on responsible, fair and transparent use. Emerging technologies include artificial intelligence, automated decision systems, machine learning, predictive analytics and biometric systems.

The City Council created the Board in September 2026. It grew out of the recommendations of the City’s Artificial Intelligence Working Group. It is the City’s main advisory body on reviewing the risks of emerging technology, on related policy and governance, and on public engagement.

What the Board does

  • Reviews and advises on City rules and policies for AI and emerging technology
  • Reviews technology that City departments plan to buy or use, and how it is used
  • Identifies risks to civil rights, privacy, equity and public trust
  • Advises on cybersecurity and IT best practices
  • Gives residents a place to comment on technologies the City is considering
  • Supports public education and promotes DTI’s public inventory of AI purchases

Membership

The Board has 11 voting members. Five are community members appointed by the Mayor with the advice and consent of the City Council. The other six are ex-officio members: the directors, or their designees, of DTI, the Office of Equity and Inclusion, Aviation, and Finance and Administrative Services, the Chief Administrative Officer, and the Council Services Director. Appointed members serve staggered three-year terms, up to two terms in a row.
