May 20, 2022

ALBUQUERQUE – APD detectives identified 32-year-old Jimmy Lopez as the suspect who allegedly fired a high-powered rifle at officers as they conducted an investigation near his home on Thursday.

Officers were in the area of 532 Espanola St SE on Thursday afternoon investigating a domestic violence incident when they heard multiple gunshots. As additional officers in the area helped to set up a perimeter, more gunshots were fired and hit gravel near the officers.

Officers determined the subject was shooting from the balcony of an apartment on Española St. Three officers on scene saw multiple bullets hit the pavement in front of them and they had to jump out of the way for their safety. Officers also saw multiple impacts on nearby apartments.

SWAT units from several agencies assisted in the effort to detain four people at the apartment. Through investigation, detectives identified Lopez as the shooter. After obtaining a search warrant, the rifle used in the shooting was discovered in the apartment.

Lopez was booked into the Metro Detention Center on charges of Aggravated Assault on Peace Officer, and Shooting at a Dwelling/Occupied Building without great bodily harm.
