Give Your Pet a Spring Tune-Up
Vaccinations keep pets safe outdoors
ALBUQUERQUE — Spring is almost here, a perfect time to make sure your pet vaccinations are current. Vaccines prevent many illnesses that can be passed between animals and help avoid costly treatments.
Diseases prevalent in wildlife, such as rabies and distemper, can infect unvaccinated pets. The City’s Animal Welfare Department (AWD) encourages all pet owners to properly vaccinate their animals. This begins with a series of puppy and kitten shots, then regular boosters throughout their adulthood.
“Part of living in a pet-friendly city means being informed and prepared,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “As we start heading outdoors more, taking smart measures can help your family pet enjoy a good long life.”
When the weather starts to warm up, people increasingly venture outside with their pets. Unfortunately, this can highlight how many animals in our community are not vaccinated against very deadly but preventable diseases.
"Vaccinating your pet is one of the easiest ways to help keep them healthy," said AWD Director Carolyn Ortega. “Together we can keep our furry companions happy and safe.”
The City offers free pet vaccinations based on income level. See if you qualify here.
