Don’t Leave the Leash at Home
Animal Welfare Department reminds people to leash their pets while out and about
ALBUQUERQUE — The City of Albuquerque Animal Welfare Department (AWD) wants residents to remember to leash their pets in Albuquerque’s parks, trails, neighborhoods, open spaces and anywhere in the city limits.
“Always leash up,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “Let’s work together to make sure everyone stays comfortable and safe while enjoying the City’s amazing outdoor spaces.”
We love our furry friends here in Albuquerque, and AWD understands that many pet parents want to let their animals roam freely. But leash laws protect their safety and the safety of others.
“Please don’t leave the leash at home,” said Director of Animal Welfare Department Carolyn Ortega. “Leashing your pet creates a safe environment for them as well as other people and critters in the community.”
Per the City of Albuquerque’s Ordinances Municipal Code § 9-2-2-2 (A), all animals are required to be on a leash. No animal shall be permitted in any street or public place within the city unless it is effectively restrained by a leash not to exceed eight feet in length. Find more information on the HEART (Humane and Ethical Animal Rules and Treatment) ordinance here.
Violators could be fined for civil violations starting at $200 for the first offense, $300 for the second, and $500 for the third or subsequent offense. Criminal charges can also be filed.
Looking for a place where your pet can play unleashed? Dog parks throughout the city feature designated off-leash areas.
