Albuquerque’s Animal Welfare Department and Albuquerque Kennel Kompadres Announces Special Cat Agility Event at Lucky Paws in Coronado Center

Part of Adopt-A-Shelter-Cat Month

Cat jumps through a hoop in a cat agility course.Looking for something to stimulate your cat other than opening cat food cans? Join the Enchanted Cat Club as they team up with the City’s Lucky Paws Adoption Center to train adoptable shelter cats to run through a cat agility course.

The event will run Saturday, June 28 from 10am to 6pm in front of Lucky Paws (next to Western Warehouse and Mervyns) in Coronado Center. Agility demonstrations will run until 4pm.

“While we are all familiar with dog agility, most people can’t even imagine training their cats to run agility courses. But cats are exceptionally agile creatures and running and jumping through a course made just for them shows off what they do naturally,” says Vickie Shields, founder of International Cat Agility Tournaments (ICAT). “This is a great way for owner and cat to interact and have fun together.”

“Getting a cat past its normal concern and cautiousness is the biggest hurdle. They have to be comfortable that they are safe on the course,” explains Shields. “Once they are comfortable with the surroundings, they just do what comes naturally!”

ICAT was founded in Albuquerque and made its debut at an Enchanted Cat Club cat show. It has since been featured at cat shows around the world and will be a focal point at The International Cat Association’s Annual Show in Dallas, Texas this August.

The event will cap off June as Adopt-A-Shelter-Cat Month. Special cat adoption rates will be $39 and each cat adopted from Lucky Paws that day will receive a kitty goody bag from the Enchanted Cat Club. The Enchanted Cat Club will also pay 50% of the adoption fee for any cat two years old and older and 75% of the adoption fee of any cat two years old and older adopted by anyone 65 years old or older.
