Doghouse Drive Helps Pets Stay Warm All Winter

Animal Welfare Department now accepting donations of medium to large doghouses

November 04, 2025

ALBUQUERQUE — As colder weather approaches, the City of Albuquerque’s Animal Welfare Department (AWD) is launching its annual Doghouse Drive aimed at helping pets keep cozy. AWD is accepting new or gently used medium to large doghouses.

“The doghouse drive will replenish the supply for our animal protection officers, who distribute them through our community program,” said Animal Protection Services Division Captain David Rose. “These doghouses bring relief to pets during the cold winter months.”

Those interested in supporting the Doghouse Drive can do so in the following ways:

  • Donate a doghouse at either city shelter —
  • Westside shelter at 11800 Sunset Gardens Rd. SW.
  • Eastside shelter on 8920 Lomas Blvd. NE.
  • Make a cash donation —
  • At either shelter location.
  • Via Pay Pal through Albuquerque Kennel Kompadres.
  • Donate by check —
    • Payable to Albuquerque Kennel Kompadres, our 501 (c) 3 charitable partner, noting Doghouse Drive in the memo.
  • Drop off at city shelters or mail to Kennel Kompadres, 139 Palacio Road, Corrales, NM 87048.

If you wish to donate a doghouse but cannot transport it, please email [email protected]  to arrange pick up.

Are you handy with tools? AWD encourages residents to build and donate custom doghouses. View recommended AWA doghouse plans here.

Pet owners might not know that having an appropriately sized doghouse for outdoor dogs is the law or may be unable to provide one. Low- and moderate-income residents can apply for the AWD Doghouse Lottery.

“No pet should be stuck in the cold without proper shelter, and no owner should feel alone in trying to provide it,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “The Doghouse Drive is another way neighbors step up for each other with that trademark One Albuquerque spirit.”
