City Rescues 17 Dogs in Statewide Effort

Animal Welfare Department is providing a safe haven and adoption opportunities

October 10, 2025

ALBUQUERQUE — The City of Albuquerque Animal Welfare Department (AWD) answered an urgent call for help last week at the Gallup-McKinley County Humane Society. AWD staff traveled to Gallup to assist with emergency placements, bringing 15 puppies and two adult dogs back to Albuquerque to ensure their safety and care.

Ten of the puppies have already found loving homes, and five puppies and two adult dogs are available for adoption at the Westside shelter. Community members can view available pets and learn more about the adoption process at www.cabq.gov/pets.

In response, AWD joined other area rescue partners to help provide emergency placements and give as many animals as possible a happy future.

“This is Albuquerque at its best,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “Our Animal Welfare team didn’t hesitate to help our neighbors and literally save lives, and we’ll continue to be there for our partner shelters when they need support.”

“When we heard about the crisis in Gallup, our team immediately mobilized to help,” said AWD Director Carolyn Ortega. “Our mission extends beyond city limits. It’s about compassion, collaboration, and making sure no animal is left behind.”

Residents looking to adopt are encouraged to visit www.cabq.gov/pets or stop by one of the city’s AWD shelters to meet adoptable pets. By adopting a shelter pet, Albuquerque families directly support lifesaving efforts throughout New Mexico.
