Dedicated volunteers with big hearts are the superheroes behind the scenes at AWD. This event is your chance to join their ranks and discover how your skills can help animals in need. Whether you're a cat cuddler, dog walker, critter photographer, or just love animals, there’s a place for you in the League of Volunteers.
Event highlights include:
- Animal meet-and-greets – Get to know some of the pets you could help.
- Facility tours – Look around and learn about shelter operations.
- Informational booths – Explore a range of volunteer opportunities and roles.
- Same-day sign-ups – On-site support available to guide you through the volunteer application process.
“Volunteers go above and beyond in caring for Albuquerque’s shelter pets,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “Joining the League of Volunteers is a rewarding way to make a major impact in our community.”
“We’re calling on everyday heroes to join our team,” said Animal Welfare Department Director Carolyn Ortega. “Whether you can spare a few hours or a few days each month, your time matters. Together we can make our shelters nicer places for the animals who need us most.”
No cape is required to be a hero. Volunteers must be 18 years or older and commit to at least six hours a month. Training is provided, and scheduling is flexible. Volunteers assist with everything from walking and socializing animals to supporting adoption events and helping in the clinic.
