Inspired by the remarkable pottery designs created by the Mimbres people of southwestern New Mexico nearly a thousand years ago, Howden transforms ancient imagery of animals, plants, and the natural world into vibrant acrylic paintings.
At 86, Howden brings a lifetime of creativity and community involvement to this body of work. A University of New Mexico graduate and former U.S. Navy servicemember, he is also the founder of the Albuquerque Folk Festival and has been active in numerous local endeavors. His artistic journey has included jewelry making, novel writing, and, most recently, his exploration of Mimbres-inspired painting.
The exhibition reflects Howden’s fascination with the deep relationship between people and the natural environment expressed in Mimbres pottery. By translating the original curved, black-and-white pottery designs into colorful, contemporary compositions on flat surfaces, he invites viewers to experience these ancient forms through a modern lens.
The exhibition will feature up to 30 acrylic paintings. At the opening reception, Howden will also offer a presentation and Q&A exploring the Mimbres people, their artistic traditions, and the inspiration behind his contemporary adaptations.
