Run for a Cause, Compete Together
City and Duke City Marathon Launch First-Ever Mayor’s Team Challenge
ALBUQUERQUE – The 43rd Annual Big 5 Duke City Marathon, in partnership with the City of Albuquerque and the Department of Parks & Recreation (PRD) launched the first-ever Mayor’s Team Challenge, a new initiative designed to expand charitable giving while bringing the community together.
“People love the Duke City Marathon, and the Mayor’s Team Challenge adds a whole new level.” said Mayor Tim Keller. “It encourages teamwork on top of healthy living and helping out organizations that make a real difference in Albuquerque.”
The Mayor’s Team Challenge involves groups of five participants that compete across five race distances: half-marathon, 10K run, 10K walk, 5K run, and 5K walk. Each team’s combined race times determine overall standings.
The challenge will support the following four local nonprofit organizations, expanding the Duke City Marathon’s impact across Albuquerque and Central New Mexico. With a goal of raising over $20,000, every team that joins the Mayor’s Team Challenge helps increase the support for these organizations and the communities they serve.
- Boys & Girls Club of Central New Mexico.
- Running Medicine.
- Running 505.
- Team Red, White & Blue (Albuquerque Chapter).
“Running Medicine has been an integral part of Albuquerque’s running community for 10 years. We participate in the Duke City Marathon annually, so the opportunity to serve as a charity group for the inaugural 2026 Mayor's Challenge feels like an equally honorable and natural partnership. We are extremely grateful to all parties for the opportunity.” said Leslie Meyer, Running Medicine Native Health Initiative Executive Director.
In addition to the Mayor’s Team Challenge, the Duke City Marathon will offer its full lineup of seven races including the marathon, marathon relay, half-marathon, 10K run, 10K walk, 5K run, and 5K walk.
“I’ve always believed the Duke City Marathon should be something fun that also gives back,” said Duke City Marathon Executive Director and Founder Manuel “Tico” Navarro.
“At the heart of this effort is investing in our kids, expanding running programs, and strengthening our community. Funds that are raised will help create more opportunities to stay active, connected, and healthy.” said PRD Director David Simon.
The Mayor’s Team Challenge is open to businesses, organizations, families, and community groups. Participants can compete as a team while remaining eligible for individual race awards
