May 07, 2025

Today, Mayor Tim Keller, City leaders, and community members came together to celebrate the official opening of the new BMX pump track at Los Altos Park. This marked completion of phase 2 of the park’s renovation project.

The new BMX pump track is the latest addition to the park’s growing list of amenities and is designed to support both local riders and regional competitions. This marks another step toward solidifying Los Altos Park as one of Albuquerque’s top recreational destinations.

“Los Altos Park has always been a community favorite, and now it’s got even more kick,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “This pump track brings the thrill, whether you're a first-time rider or a seasoned pro, it’s the perfect place to roll, ride, and rally together.”

Although Albuquerque already boasts a dirt BMX track, this new pump track offers a different type of riding experience with smooth, flowing contours designed for riders of all abilities. The track also suits larger-scale events that will attract regional and national attention.

“I’m so glad to have this pump track open now,” said Kalvin Davis, local pro BMX rider. “We can’t wait to put on some races here and get people from out of town to come visit.”

In addition to the pump track, phase 2 improvements include a brand-new dog park, completion of the central pedestrian walkway connecting major park features, upgraded road access, improved parking, and expanded landscaping that enhances the park’s natural beauty.

"The improvements at Los Altos Park bring together everything I love about our community—fun, connection, and care for our four-legged family members, said City Councilor Tammy Fiebelkorn. “The new dog park and BMX pump track make this park a place for everyone to enjoy, and I’m proud to see it continue to grow as a vibrant space in District 7."

“This is a smart investment in quality of life,” said Senate President Pro Tempore Mimi Stewart. “The upgrades at Los Altos Park give our youth more to be proud of and more ways to stay active—and that’s a win for our entire community."

“It’s been my honor and pleasure to be a part of the amazing transformation of Los Altos Park. I’ve spent many happy hours there, watching my dad play senior softball, trying to play tennis and just enjoying the beautiful park. It’s come a long way since then, and is indeed a jewel of Albuquerque. I can’t wait to see New Mexicans enjoying this beautiful space.” said State Representative Liz Thomson.“

“Growing up playing softball and swimming at Los Altos, I’ve seen its value to our community,” said State Representative Debra Sariñana. “The Phase 2 completion will be it an even better place for our kids to enjoy.”

The new pump track was built on land owned by the New Mexico Department of Transportation in partnership with the City’s Parks and Recreation Department. It complements the park’s existing BMX dirt track and aligns with the City’s vision to provide diverse recreational opportunities for residents and visitors.

“We’re thrilled to see how Los Altos Park is evolving into a world-class facility that serves the needs of our community,” said Dave Simon, Director of Parks & Recreation. “The pump track is just one of many new features that make this park even more vibrant and accessible.”

The renovations to Los Altos Park represent a $10 million investment from City funds and state capital outlay. Phase 1, completed in 2023, focused on the park’s softball complex, parking, and access improvements. Phase 2 construction, which began in May 2024, was completed in just under a year. The pedestrian bridge over I-40 is also back open.

Everyone is invited to visit and enjoy all the new features of Los Altos Park, including the exciting new BMX pump track!
