Phil Chacon Park Closes for Major Renovations

Parks and Recreation Department Announces First Phase of Improvements for Park.

Dec. 13, 2022

The City of Albuquerque’s Parks and Recreation Department (PRD) announced the exciting kickoff for a major renovation to Phil Chacon Park. After engaging the community to reimagine a new Phil Chacon Park, a plan has been developed to improve some favorite, existing features and add new ones. The park will be expanded to include some property to the east of the current park. Phase I of the project will be a complete renovation to the irrigation system, the playground and basketball courts. The new additions include a dog park, pump track, softball field and futsal court.

“The massive investment the City is making into this park shows the commitment to bettering community facilities for generations to come,” said Dave Simon, Director of Parks and Recreation. “We hope these improvements will be enjoyed by families and sports groups alike.”

As part of Phase I, infrastructure for a future community garden and future public art areas will be installed. The project is an estimated at $6 million dollars and covers approximately 12 acres.

Phil Chacon Park will be closed for the duration of demolition and construction. Demolition will begin immediately and construction will begin in early spring. The tentative date for reopening the park is Winter 2023. For more information about this project visit the Phil Chacon Park Renovations webpage.
