Open Space Explorer Camp Registration Begins Saturday

Kids will take part in hands-on learning activities about Albuquerque’s natural surroundings

The City of Albuquerque’s Parks & Recreation Department is opening registration for its popular Open Space Explorer Camp on Saturday, March 9. The camp, which is held at the Open Space Visitor Center, launches its second year of weekly camps where kids get to explore Albuquerque’s environment and natural surroundings this summer.

The Open Space Explorer Camp is one of dozens of amazing programs the City offers. Families can find out more about all of them this Saturday, March 9 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at Tiguex Park for the City’s Spring Into Summer event.

“With more than 29,000 acres of beautiful Open Space in and around Albuquerque, the Open Space Explorer Camp is a perfect way for kids to spend a week of their summer break,” stated Dave Simon, Director of Parks and Recreation. “This camp will help inspire the next generation of conservationists to protect the natural resources that help make our city so great.”

Staff at the Open Space Visitor Center will provide guided instructional and recreational activities during weekly day camps. Kids will take guided tours through the Bosque, gain an understanding of how nature influences local artists, and explore the Visitor Center’s gardens filled with native vegetation. They will take part in crafts, games, activities and more throughout the month. The Explorer Camp is intended to help Albuquerque’s kids gain a better understanding of the environment and our City’s natural surroundings.

The weekly camp sessions begin June 18, 2019 and will run every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday through August 8. Registration is $15.00 per participant per week. Kids are encouraged to bring water, a hat, sunscreen, a snack and/or lunch. Registration will take place online beginning Saturday, March 9 at play.cabq.gov.
