“Operation Cooldown 2025” Kicks Off to Help Beat the Heat

City offers sprinkler play as summer temps rise.
July 11, 2025

The City’s Parks & Recreation Department (PRD) is activating “Operation Cooldown 2025,” as temperatures are expected to hit triple digits according to the National Weather Service. This program was first launched in July 2023.

During Operation Cooldown 2025, on days Monday-Saturday when Albuquerque’s temperature is forecasted to reach 100 degrees or above PRD will offer sprinkler play in five parks around the City from 1 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. The first group of parks that will offer sprinkler play, today, July 11, from 1 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., are:

  • Rotary Park – 7725 Quintana NE
  • Seville Park – 6200 Burgos NW
  • Bandelier Park – 1700 Yale SE
  • Sierra Sunset Park – 10600 Big Springs SW
  • Villela Park – 6910 Cherokee NE

Each group will include a park within the Sunport Pool service area, since that pool is currently closed for repairs. PRD balances this daytime watering by adjusting irrigation systems to save water at other times. A long period of sustained temperatures above 100 degrees, however, may require adjusting the Operation Cooldown program.

“If we hit triple-digit temps, this offers a fun way for families to cool off close to home,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “Operation Cooldown is about keeping our city safe, active, and connected during the hottest days of summer.”

“We’re bringing the fun to you!” said PRD Director Dave Simon. “Whether it’s sprinklers, pools, or splash pads, we want to give everyone options to stay cool.”

The City’s pools and splash pads are also open for the summer season, with special deals at the pools: Kids 17 and under swim for free on Sundays, children under age two always swim for free, and select pools offer $1 swim on Friday nights.

All of the City’s splash pads are currently open except for Manzano Mesa Multi-Gen Center, which is under construction. Learn more about the splash pads and their hours here.
