Housing Discrimination

Information about housing discrimination.

Fair Housing is a right protected by the Albuquerque Human Rights Ordinance. Fair housing means you may freely choose a place to live without regard to your:

  • Race
  • Color
  • National origin
  • Ancestry
  • Religion
  • Sex
  • Physical Handicap
  • Source of Income

Fair housing protects your right to housing choice to include most:

  • Rental opportunities
  • Home buying opportunities
  • Advertising of housing

It is also unlawful to:

  • Threaten,
  • Intimidate, or
  • Interfere with

any person's right to fair housing.

Common Examples of Discrimination in Housing:

  • On the telephone, I was encouraged by the landlord to come and see a vacant apartment. When I arrived the landlord saw that I was Black and informed me that there was no longer a vacancy.
  • At my apartment complex, I have noticed that the landlord only runs a criminal background check on applicants who are Hispanic and Native American.
  • I have a mobility impairment and my apartment complex refused to assign me an accessible parking space close to my door.
  • The landlord informed me they do not accept vouchers.
