What is the West Central Complete Streets Project?

West Central Avenue is getting exciting upgrades to make it safer and easier for everyone to use—whether you’re driving, walking, biking, or taking the bus.

The City of Albuquerque is working with the New Mexico Department of Transportation and the U.S. Department of Transportation to improve this stretch of Central as part of the West Central Complete Streets Project. The goal is simple: make it safer, more accessible, and more reliable for the people who live, work, and travel along this corridor every day.

Where is this project located?

This project is located on Central Avenue from Sarracino Place to 98th Street

Why is this project important?

Central Ave is an important and busy local and regional corridor. This project will address many existing challenges and is focused on making everyday travel safer and more comfortable by improving things like:

  • Better sidewalks and bike connections
  • Safer crossings at key intersections like 90th, Bridge Blvd, and 98th
  • Upgraded bus stops for transit riders
  • Better lighting to improve visibility and safety at night
  • Improvements to drainage
  • Continued frontage road improvements

This work also supports the City’s Vision Zero goals by building safe multimodal infrastructure to prevent serious traffic crashes and save lives. It also builds on community priorities already identified for better bike and pedestrian access along Central.

What is the project timeline?

Project staff anticipates completing the final project design in the Fall of 2026, with construction expected to begin in Spring 2027.

How is this project funded?

At this time, the project is funded for design and construction using local and federal funds.
