Albuquerque Fire Rescue Launches Live Fire Training Program

All sworn personnel to participate in live fire evolutions.

January 20, 2026

Albuquerque Fire Rescue Chief Emily Jaramillo is making live-fire drills available for all sworn firefighters as part of the department’s annual fire suppression training. Chief Jaramillo participated in the training last week.

“AFR responded to 290 working structure fires last year which is why I have prioritized providing realistic, fire-based training to all sworn members," Chief Jaramillo said. "The level of training currently being provided by AFR’s highly skilled staff is top notch and comparable to some of the best fire training nationwide. Highly competent firefighters are safer firefighters and highly competent firefighters is what Albuquerque residents deserve.”

Providing live fire training to the entire department has been a long-standing goal for AFR. Years of planning, research, and development, along with significant investments in the Fire Academy grounds, have culminated in this achievement. The enhanced facilities and curriculum reflect AFR’s commitment to delivering the most realistic and effective fireground training possible.

This level of training is made possible through the dedication and initiative of AFR’s Academy staff and the full support of Fire Chief Emily Jaramillo. In addition to the annual suppression refresher, AFR is offering advanced engine and ladder operations courses, which approximately 10 percent of the department has already completed.

AFR’s Fire Academy is equipped with three burn structures capable of supporting multiple fire evolutions and burn packages. The expansion of the training grounds underscores the department’s commitment to providing realistic, hands-on training scenarios in a controlled environment.
