City Adds Teen Recreation Options
Ages expanded for community center memberships
The City of Albuquerque is updating its community center membership guidelines to better serve teens and provide a safe, supportive space for young people to thrive. Youth passes will now cover ages 5-11, while teen passes will be available for ages 12-17, a shift from the previous 16-17 teen pass age range.
“We’ve always offered teen employment opportunities that help young people build valuable skills,” said Youth and Family Services Director Jess Martinez. “Now with the expanded passes, we welcome teens to join in our free community center programs or consider job options.”
With 18 community centers – each offering free amenities including fitness centers, computer labs, game rooms, and gymnasiums – Albuquerque is committed to helping teens stay positive and grow.
This initiative aligns closely with the City’s Teen Connect program, which provides crucial support and resources such as mentorship, educational workshops, mental health resources, and recreational opportunities designed to empower youth and promote community engagement.
“Teen crime is a major concern for our city, and creating spaces where our young people feel welcomed and supported is essential for the health of our community,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “By expanding our teen pass eligibility, we are making our facilities more youth-friendly and prioritizing positive outlets and resources.”
Teen pass holders will need to follow community center policies. Parents and guardians are reminded that youth ages 11 and under require adult supervision to access facilities, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for all age groups.
The City encourages all teens and families to take advantage of these enhanced opportunities at their local community centers and join the growing movement to support Albuquerque’s youth.
