ALBUQUERQUE, NM – June 7, 2025 – Councilor Renée Grout’s Fourth Annual “Touch-a-Truck” event brought smiles and excitement to families and children from across District 9 and the greater Albuquerque area today. The free event, held at Franklin Plaza, provided a unique opportunity for attendees of all ages to get an up-close look at a wide array of city and county vehicles.

From the flashing lights of fire trucks and police cars to the impressive scale of road construction equipment, the event offered a hands-on experience for all. Children had the chance to climb aboard a front-end loader, explore a dump truck, and learn about the "vactor" used to clean storm drains, and the cranes used to care for trees in Albuquerque parks and open spaces.

A highlight of the day was the presence of law enforcement vehicles and robots from the Albuquerque Police Department (APD), Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office (BCSO), and New Mexico State Police, including Kirtland AFB Drone Operators and APD Mounted Patrol.

The Albuquerque Fire Rescue (AFR) was also on hand with the brand-new open space fire truck, which Councilor Grout funded for District 9. Children swarmed around the Albuquerque Sunport’s gigantic runway snow blower and deicing equipment.

“I was so proud to see the new brush truck purchased for AFR. Seeing police officers and firefighters in that environment removes any fear they may have and brings our community together,” said Councilor Renée Grout. “I’d like to thank Commissioner Olivas and County personnel for their support, the City of Albuquerque Departments, and City Council staff who work so hard to make this event happen each year.”

In addition to the impressive display of vehicles and equipment, the two-hour event was packed full of a variety of engaging activities and community resources. The City’s Aviation, Community Safety, Arts & Culture, Senior Affairs, Parks & Rec, and Youth and Family Services departments hosted informational booths with fun demonstrations and activities.

The Animal Welfare Department held a successful pet adoption event, connecting loving families with furry friends in need of a home.

Food trucks served up delicious treats, and a festive atmosphere was enjoyed by all. Informational booths from City Community Centers, Libraries, and Senior Centers provided valuable information about their upcoming summer programs.

“Touch-A-Truck gives youngsters and adults a rare look at the service equipment and the personnel that keep our City and County running,” Councilor Grout concluded. “The awe and glee on the children’s faces show that this event may spark interest in future careers with the City of Albuquerque. My deep appreciation goes to all the families who came out to make the Fourth Annual Touch-a-Truck a resounding success.”
