Central Avenue Neon
In preparation for the Route 66 Centennial in 2026, the City of Albuquerque will design and create an iconic neon sign that will reside on East Central Avenue, the Destination Forward program is supporting the implementation of this project.
Background
In June 2025 City Councilor Renée Grout worked closely with the District 9 Community and Wilson and to design an archway for East Central in preparation for the Route 66 Centennial. The winning design was selected by public input via Councilor Grout's Central Avenue Neon project webpage.
Funded by a $328,800 FY25 NM Tourism's Destination Forward grant, the winning design (featured below) will be installed over the East end of Central Ave, with Council District 9 in the coming months.
In early May 2026, Councilor Grout along with Wilson & Company announced the start of the arch construction and planned installation.
